Your Name: Sabrina Brouwer
Brand Name: Polish Alcoholic

Where are you from? Almere, Flevoland, The Netherlands
When have you started? July 2013

Is there  a story behind the name of your brand? Yes, http://www.etsy.com/nl/shop/PolishAlcoholic

How many polishes/collections have you created? As of today there are 29 polishes available at my shop from holo to duo chrome to glow in the dark to glitter and even glow in the dark. Some of them are part of collections and others are stand alone's.
Is there a special polish/collection? Why? Not at this time. I mean, all polishes are special by themselves :D

Do you have a best seller? I've made a holographic top coat (Spectraflair 35) that glows blue in the dark a while back which was sold out in just one day. Therefore I decided to create more glow in the dark/holo polishes. A purple version will be available from October 9th.

Where you a polish addicted before starting making polishes? Absolutely. I collect polish for about four years now and blog about it since slightly over a year.
Did you have a blog before making polishes or have you started one after? Yes I do! I share my love for nail polish and nail art here: http://polishalcoholic.com/

Whats your favorite thing about making polishes? Creating a new unique shade (with the perfect combination of glitter).

Can you tell us a curious thing that has happened to you with some client or something funny? Hmmm that's hard. Especially since I just started :D

Do you ship international? Of course!

So .. what am I going to do? Everyday, I'm going to show you a different brand of Indie Nail Polishes (and some of their major stockists too!! )

Your Name: Joanne
Brand Name: Daphine Polish

Where are you from? New York City

When have you started? The brand launched in July 2013 but I have been experimenting and testing since December 2012

Is there a story behind the name of your brand? Daphine is a nickname that I got in middle school, which stuck with me through most of high school. The friend who gave it to me is still asking for royalties :P

How many polishes/collections have you created? Four collections so far (Daria, Beach, Goddess, and Sleepy Hollow) and a few non-collection polishes floating around, as well.

Is there a special polish/collection? Why? Surf & Sand is a color I created for a photo inspiration challenge in a Facebook group, and the overwhelming positive response is what made me decide that I could do this (sell my polish). It's also one of my best sellers!
Do you have a best seller? As said above, Surf & Sand from the Beach collection is definitely my #1

Daria collection
Where you a polish addicted before starting making polishes? Yes! I remember buying Sally Hansen and Revlon Street Wear polishes at the drugstore as kid/teen. Before it had a name (that we knew of) my friends and I would franken our own colors from the assorted polishes we owned. Add too many colors of store-bough polish and you always get a dark blue-black! About two years ago is when I learned about the world of indie polish, which really opened my eyes! I got into glitters and learned about jellies and crellies and got caught up in the restock madness! At the moment my polish stash hovers around 650 bottles.

goddess collection
Did you have a blog before making polishes or have you started one after? I do not have a blog. The time I spend editing photos for listings is exhausting, I can't imagine doing it full-time! I do love to share NOTD (nail of the day) pictures on Pinterest but I have fallen out of the habit since I spend so much time testing my own polish now.

halloween collection
Whats your favorite thing about making polishes? I love the mad scientist element of it. I put together a color base and then ask myself "what glitter would look good in this?" So I pull out all of my glitters in that color (this can take awhile lol) and toss 'em in. You never know what you might create! I also have a pretty mundane 9-5 job, so the creative outlet is great.

Can you tell us a curious thing that has happened to you with some client or something funny? When I pack an order for a customer I like to re-tighten the caps on the bottles before I wrap them. Recently I guess I over-tightened and the cap broke in my hand! It was a very Hulk-smash moment for me. Luckily the bottle was fine and I didn't spill it all over myself! Is there anything you'd Like to share: Ahh I'm so bad at the "do you have any questions?" portion of the interview! I don't think so :)

* * *

Your Name: Sarey

Brand Name: Chaos & Crocodiles

Where are you from? Maryland, USA

When have you started? I first started making polish in 2011, and I opened my shop on June 24, 2012.

Is there a story behind the name of your brand? Oh yes! When I was trying to come up with a name, I made lists and lists of ones that I liked, but there was nothing that jumped out as being “the one.” After staying up really late one night and going through potential names, I realized that I wasn’t going to figure it out right then and decided to go to bed. I woke up the next morning believing that I had named my shop Chaos & Crocodiles. I have absolutely no idea where it came from, but it really works because it represents living my dreams, following my heart, and being bold and unique. Plus, it’s a fun name, and C&C is all about fun. :-)

How many polishes/collections have you created? I’ve released over 70 polishes so far, but I have created hundreds of prototypes.

Is there a special polish/collection? Why?
They are all special in different ways. :-) To get into the shop, each polish has to pass a test (along with the usual quality testing). The test is that I have to want to stare at the polish for long periods of time while wearing it, and hug the bottle and and carry it around with me everywhere. Oh, and talk to it when nobody else is looking and make it a tiny bed. I was just kidding about the last ones... Or was I?

Where you a polish addicted before starting making polishes? Yes! I’ve been into nail polish for a long time, and it also helps that I’ve always been completely obsessed with everything shiny, sparkly, glittery, glowy, and rainbowy. I get very easily distracted by those things, so you can probably imagine how I am while I am working on polishes.

Did you have a blog before making polishes or have you started one after?
I started a blog after I began making polishes.

Whats your favorite thing about making polishes? Squee! Polish making is a dream come true and I adore EVERYTHING about it. But if I had to choose, I’d say my number one favorite is my customers. They are amazing people, and I’ve so enjoyed getting to know them. I love talking to them, and I always get really excited when they talk about their C&C polishes or show me their bottle and swatch pictures. It’s really cool to look at the polishes I’ve made through someone else’s eyes!

Can you tell us a curious thing that has happened to you with some client or something funny? When I first started making polish, I didn’t always put the lids all the way back on things when I was going to be using them again immediately (I bet you can guess where this is going, but I’ll tell you anyway). I had just mixed together some beautiful glitters when I realized that I needed one more thing. So I set the lid loosely on top of the container with the glitter in it and went over to my supply station. When I came back, I picked up the mix to use it, tried to sit on my stool, fell clumsily off, and threw the container in the air. It was like being in a parade. I was in shock, but I think I was actually more upset that I lost the glitter than that I had made a huge mess. Now I tighten everything down, no matter how soon I’m going to be using it! :-P

Is there anything you'd like to share: Thank you so much for doing this project! <3

Your Name: Carmen

Brand Name: Too Fancy Lacquer

Where are you from? Australia, currently living in Hong Kong

When have you started? June 2013

Is there a story behind the name of your brand? My bf has a saying (taken from a rap song called, you guess it, 'Fancy') that goes "Too Fancy huh", and it just somehow got stuck!

How many polishes/collections have you created? There are 10 polishes in the current lineup, but I have also done many custom polishes for friends.

Is there a special polish/collection? Why? My current collection is pretty special to me, since it is my very first one, and they are holos!!

Do you have a best seller? Tell Me A Sea-cret, a seaform green linear holo

Where you a polish addicted before starting making polishes? Totally!

Did you have a blog before making polishes or have you started one after? I have been blogging about polishes a couple years before I started Too Fancy Lacquer. I'm not a big time blogger, I mostly do it just for fun, and to share my pretties! My blog is called Polish Me Up! (http://cacanails.blogspot.hk/)

Whats your favorite thing about making polishes? I love getting lost in all the different colors, textures, and finishes! The magical thing about making polishes is that by varying your formula/combination, you could end up with a totally different polish. How awesome is that!

Can you tell us a curious thing that has happened to you with some client or something funny?

One day while I was mixing up polishes, I accidentally knocked off the entire bottle of green colorant. There was green liquid everywhere; on the coffee table, floor, couch, and worst of all, all over my face and body! I was turned into Hulk! Immediately I tried to clean myself off with acetone, but it wasn't doing the job (colorant is a pretty concentrated dye!). So I tried to use alcohol swipe to clean my skin, and although it helped a little bit, my skin was stung bad because I have very sensitive skin.

After trying to clean myself off for two hours to no avail, I jumped onto Goggle for suggestions. Turned out it was not difficult to remove oil-based colorant at all! All you needed to do was to clean the affected area with soup, then wiped your skin with Baby Oil, rinsed it off with warm water, and voila! I was human again! Thank goodness for the Internet!

Do you ship international? I definitely do!

For those who don't know what I am talking about (Follow me through Facebook to know a lot more!) * * *

Your Name: Aleksandra (Alla for short)

Brand Name: InDecisive Lacquer

Where are you from? Omaha, NE

When have you started?  I have been mixing up nail polishes since before someone clever named it “frankening”. I even remember putting eye shadow into my nail polishes! I started experimenting with pigments and doing more intensive research into creating my own polishes at the beginning of 2012, but it took me most of the year to be comfortable enough to sell my creations to others. My Etsy shop officially opened at the end of November 2012.

Is there a story behind the name of your brand? It’s a play on my college major (something called “Decision Science” that no one’s ever heard of- it’s like a mix of psychology and economics). I've studied judgment and decision making for years, but that only serves to make me more aware of it and more… indecisive! That, combined with the fact that I have so many polishes (and I can never decide which to wear) made it seem like a fitting name. My husband actually came up with it!

How many polishes/collections have you created? As far as what I've created commercially: in my shop I currently have 12 different polishes for sale, including 4 shades of color changing “Ichor”.  I've also made a limited edition shade with blogger Michelle (@LacquerorLeaveHer) that she named “End of the Universe”, so I guess that’s a total of 13 polishes. I know that’s not too many, but even though I’m always working on new colors, my process for releasing shades is pretty slow. I’m somewhat of a perfectionist, so I want my polish to be as good as it possibly can be before I sell it in my shop. I keep each polish for months, watch it, wear it, give it to friends to wear and critique and I make changes over a lot of iterations before I settle on a final version. If I didn't do that, I’m sure I’d have 20 versions of each polish and that would just be confusing for everyone! I’m so jealous of the indie polish makers that can throw a bunch of things into a bottle, shake it up, and POOF magically appears an amazing polish.  I wish I could always do that, but that’s just not how it usually works for me.

Is there a special polish/collection? Why? My original “Ichor” is quite special to me. It changes color from clear to black, so you can layer it over another color and get a *your color here* to black color change polish. This polish is what started it all for me, in that it prompted me to start selling my polishes.  I've never seen something like it before, and as far as I know, it’s truly a unique item that you can’t really find other places. The pigment that I use for it is quite expensive (and I buy it in bulk), so I know it’s not otherwise easily accessible to most people. I knew I wanted to show people this awesome effect polish, and  I figured it wouldn't hurt to also try selling a few more of my favorite polish creations along with it (just in case people happened to like those too) - and that’s how I started selling my polishes! “Ichor” is definitely my best selling polish, and on the request of my awesome customers I have recently added 3 more colors to that collection (red, blue, purple). The response has been great so far! You have no idea how happy it makes me that people like my creations as much as I do. If that continues, I’ll start looking into adding even more colors!

Where you a polish addicted before starting making polishes? Most definitely! I think you have to be in order to make polishes! It’s a labor of love.

Did you have a blog before making polishes or have you started one after? Nah, I don’t have a blog… I’m sure no one would want to hear me ramble on – if you've read this far though, I’m seriously impressed!
I don’t have a facebook/twitter/etc for InDecisive Lacquer either. People keep telling me I need to do that, but tbh I’m dreading it a little. I can be a little awkward sometimes, so I’m pretty sure I’ll end up putting my foot in my mouth or saying something stupid more often than providing something useful.

Whats your favorite thing about making polishes? My favorite thing about making polishes is that I end up with more polishes! I’ve also met some really cool people doing this, so that’s a nice bonus too.

Can you tell us a curious thing that has happened to you with some client or something funny?
Uhm… well… I guess this could maybe be a little funny: The collaboration shade I made with Lacquer or Leave Her wasn’t actually intended to be limited edition. I’m actually a little bummed that it turned out that way (I worked so hard on it, and a lot of people seemed to really like it), but I had a little bit of an ordeal with the pigment I used to make it.  I finished my first batch of pigment on EotU, and I ordered more of the exact same pigment from the same supplier. I ordered a TON of it (I may possibly have a thing for blue polishes, and I had so many plans for it…), but it turns out that the pigment I received was most definitely not the same pigment as I used for the first run of EotU. It looked basically the same (though slightly darker), same supplier, same name… but the problem was that it stained (the old pigment didn’t). It stained everything. Literally everything. I’m still cleaning blue out of places I didn’t think could possibly turn blue. I’m pretty sure it would stain if you just looked at it wrong. As much as I loved the polish, I couldn’t really justify selling people something that would stain their nails blue. I could only sell just the small initial batch I did, and it sold out pretty quick. I guess now after writing this, I realize it wasn't all that funny…

Is there anything you'd Like to share: I just wanted to thank you, Betty, for inviting me to be on your awesome blog alongside so many extremely talented polish makers! I am beyond honored. I can’t wait to read your review and see what you think of my polishes J

Do you ship international? I don’t *officially* but if you’re international really want to try out my polishes, send me a message on Etsy and we’ll see if we can work something out.  I prefer to do it on a case by case basis, because there are some places I’m very hesitant to ship to.

Lets see some swatches!

Black Speckled
Gorgeous multi sized black glitter on a clear base making it a very multi-purpose black speckled glitter. One coat over the pink base Mollon Amelie. The glitters spread nice and evenly and dried quite fast.

White Speckled
Very similar to black speckled, this is its antagonist. A formula very well pigmented filled with muli sized (yet small) white glitter it is a much needed glitter top coat. 1 coat over Mollon UV #63 Côte d'Azur. Fast drying time.

The stickers are by Born Pretty Shop. I applied them on the nail with no trouble at all . They are quite cute and inexpensive, Around 3$ for the bunch. As you can see by the picture bellow the page with the stickers  is quite large, so totally worth the price. They stick ino the nail very well and hold on tight after just one coat of top coat.
Os autocolantes dourados aplicam-se com bastante facilidade.  Colam bastane bem e não descolam nas pontinhas. Quando se aplica top coat, eles aguentam-se muito bem!

Don't forget my 10% OFF Coupon code!

Sparkly Vampire
This polish is beyond gorgeous!  Fine red glitter fills a dark red/brownish base color and makes this polish into a sexy weapon! I loved loved loved wearing it. 3 thin coats for full opacitu and a gorgeous shinny finish. I applied one coat of a glossy top coat to make the outcome deeper and shinnier and it dried in around 5 mins. LOVE IT!

Cosmic Bubbles

This is a cosmic polish indeed! The formula is very similar to white speckled even tho it has not a clear base but a bright vivid blue . What a fantastic outcome! If you could picture a bright starry sky this is what it would look like. The finish is a shinny crelly after 3 thin coats. Drying time of around 6mins.
